Change it Up: Variety is the Spice of Your Sporty Life

For the first time this year, I did not enroll in boot camp.

There are a lot of reasons for that, but mostly it had to do with the fact that I was having a really rough time trying to manage the physical demands of camp with the physical demands of training for cyclocross.

I was blowing myself up from 5:30 to 6:30am every weekday and then going out for a training ride in the early evening.  Inevitably, I felt like shit on my rides.  The last straw came when I overdid a Friday boot camp session and hit the Alpenrose cross crusade opener with zero juice in my legs. 

It sucked.  And I sucked.  I did everything I knew in order to speed my recovery process but sometimes not even nutritional-supplement magic can save you.  I was fried that morning and my results showed it – I placed 19th and suffered terrifically during the effort.

Results have improved steadily since then, and I feel good and snappy when I hit the line on Sundays.  My bike fitness is improving dramatically and, for the first time in years and years, I am open to the possibility that I might actually be good on a bike – if I only give myself the chance.

The hiatus from boot camp has reminded me that one of the most important parts of being successful and remaining focused, is mixing things up on a regular basis.  Try new things, change your training routine every 4-6 weeks, experiment with new recipes, learn a new sport… just do something different and you’re bound to be more motivated.

I’m planning a big, new workout program for December through February in order to take advantage of the off-season for cycling.  Doing the research and getting everything in place for this program has been energizing and exciting.  I’ll be talking more about this in the coming weeks – and sharing my process for getting mentally and physically ready for the challenge I’m about to take on.

In the meantime, I am trying to keep my obsessive-compulsive cyclocross addiction in check.  I lay in bed at night and think about riding.  I dream about racing.  I talk about it endlessly.  It’s getting out of control but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

There is a rumbling inside of me that is trying to convince me to ride a road season next year.  There are rumors of cycling coaches and power taps.  I’m a little afraid of what might happen if I become a full-on cycling-obsessed whack-job like Sal, but part of me is really curious.

I can’t wait to see how this plays out…
