Cupid Stories to Make You Laugh or Cry

4 Comments 14 February 2009Print This Post

Regular readers probably already know that my mom is a columnist.  She writes for the Seattle P.I. (at least until they go down in a big, fiery disaster… but such is the fate of newspapers, I suppose).

She’s a great writer and I’m not just saying that because she’s my mom.  I probably learned everything I know from her, though I was in denial for so long about the fact that I liked to write, that I’m not really sure any more.

Either way, I grew up reading her column.  It had various names over the years but I’ve always referred to it as “the happy column”.  It’s the good damn news that makes you want to be alive – as opposed to the crap that you usually read.  Wrenching stories about puppies rescued and couples reunited after war.  That sort of thing.

My cycling column is a far cry from what she’s done over the course of her career, but it’s fun every once in a while to send her a draft in a hasty email that says, “HELP!!!”  She always writes back with something along the lines of, “It’s perfect!”

Once a mother, always a mother, I guess.  I always just sigh, look at Sal and say, “Why do I send these things to her anyway?”

This Valentine’s Day, she kind of knocked it out of the park.  I even squirted a tear or two.

So, for your lovey-dovey, Hallmark-hijacked, Saturday love fest of 2009, you can either laugh or cry:

Check out my mom’s V-Day column about a beloved couple battling the monster of dementia or, if you’re not feeling quite that intense, take in a little ditty about the way my old man taught me to love the bike. Either way, kiss the one you love – or your best friend – or your dog – or your bike… and smile to yourself.

Happy Valentines Day.

HAHA! I love the comment on that link about riding a tandem. That would be the day. I could only imagine what my reaction would be like if someone asked me the same question.

    Great article!

And you know what they say, “wherever your relationship is headed, you’ll get there faster on a tandem!”

You blow my ever-lovin’ mind. I hope each of us will have a love like yours and Sally’s.

Thanks for the link to your mom’s column. She’s passed on her story-telling gene to you!
