Regular readers probably already know that my mom is a columnist. She writes for the Seattle P.I. (at least until they go down in a big, fiery disaster… but such is the fate of newspapers, I suppose).
She’s a great writer and I’m not just saying that because she’s my mom. I probably learned everything I know from her, though I was in denial for so long about the fact that I liked to write, that I’m not really sure any more.
Either way, I grew up reading her column. It had various names over the years but I’ve always referred to it as “the happy column”. It’s the good damn news that makes you want to be alive – as opposed to the crap that you usually read. Wrenching stories about puppies rescued and couples reunited after war. That sort of thing.
My cycling column is a far cry from what she’s done over the course of her career, but it’s fun every once in a while to send her a draft in a hasty email that says, “HELP!!!” She always writes back with something along the lines of, “It’s perfect!”
Once a mother, always a mother, I guess. I always just sigh, look at Sal and say, “Why do I send these things to her anyway?”
This Valentine’s Day, she kind of knocked it out of the park. I even squirted a tear or two.
