Happy 11th Anniversary, Sicilian.

It’s true. Today’s our anniversary. I read somewhere that on the 11th anniversary you’re supposed to give dirty laundry, so that’s my plan. But before I surprise him with house chores, a little stroll down memory lane. 1999 and 2000 were precariously documented because I was still in college and therefore somewhat preoccupied, but 2001 onward was a virtual paparazzi festival of photo taking mania. We’ll start there and continue on with a few more time-machine posts later this week.

The week surrounding our anniversary is historically referred to as “Romance-a-thon”.

Welcome to a week of sappy stories and old photos mixed in among your regular Grit & Glimmer programming, people. You’ve been warned.

Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Our first apartment was across the street.

It’s the off white one, to the right of the blue one. With that lemony-ass Montero parked out front.

Not a lot of stuff. But just enough. No bikes in our life at this point.

My hair was platinum as the day is long.

The path from the apartment to the beach.
We spent a lot of time there drinking coffee and eating bagels from Java Beach. Which we called “Java Bitch” because those women in there were mean.

You can see why I fell for him, right?

I have no idea how we took this picture.
This was the original Romance-a-Thon: Spring boarding in Tahoe.

Short sleeves. Holler!

In 2003 we went back to Sicily to visit Sal’s family. I shot a lot of film, mostly with two trusty Holgas.
I also ate a LOT of Arancine.

Seaside pizzeria, seafood appetizers. I call them “treats from the sea”.
We drank two bottles of wine that night. Red lips.

The virgin next to the telephone in Zia Rosetta’s house. It still looks exactly like this, I imagine. Has for years.

Beach! This is one of my favorite photos of us. I have stickers of it that I put in secret places on my bikes.

The beach in the town where Sal was born.

Sal walking his hometown streets. Photo scanned backwards.
I learned a lot about him on this trip. First and foremost that he doesn’t do jet lag very well.

Trabia. Backward again. For effect.

2004 -2006 is on the way.

  2. Bravo! and also, awwww….

I love these photos and the journey they represent. Long may it continue.

  3. Loved that! Look forward to the next installment and hello bright blonde head wow, so cute.

Congratulations you two, 11 years is impressive!

  4. I didn’t realize you two were together that long. 11 years is wonderful. Congrats!

  5. Thanks, guys!
Erik – I know. It seems impossible.
    We met when I was 21. Sal was a 28-year-old cradle-robbing son-of-a-gun.

  6. YEA! Safe travels back. Did you say double date Eastern Oregon bike tour this summer?

    You. Both. Rock. Romance.
I only aspire to love like you guys do.

  7. I think there’s a rule that women cyclists are supposed to be with older guys. (A lot of Team VBF are dating men with 10+ years of age gap difference.) My Mr. and I are 12 years apart. I think it has something to do with our maturity level as women and as cyclists being just so much higher. ;-)

Happy anniversary! I enjoyed the photo journey and LOVE your platinum hair. I’d do it but I’m too scared.

  8. The platinum would look AMAZING on you. But it destroys the hair and upkeep is a BEEhotch. I was platinum for 5 years.

  9. Happy Anniversary!
I can see why you fell for him and i can see why he fell for you!

I’d do the platinum hair thing too if i had any :(

  10. You two are adorable and kinda enviable. Looks like your journeys together, both in the long and short, have been amazing. :)
