iPhone Software for Gear Calculations (I’m not kidding)
This is just about one of the geekiest things to hit the Bike Nerd Kingdom in a long time – and I’m impressed.
About 6 weeks ago, I crossed a line that I swore I’d never go near. I started geeking out on gear inches. Two reasons: I was in the throes of spec-ing out my new ‘cross rig, and I was preparing to do the Timothy Lake 200k brevet so I was contemplating putting a compact crank on my Cross-to-Rando Poprad conversion.
Sitting there with a gear-inch calculator pulled up on screen, I felt about as cool as I did in the 7th grade when I was playing flute in the band with braces over my buck teeth, permed blonde hair, and pink plastic-rimmed glasses. (No, there will not be pictures.)
The gear-geek factor is a slippery slope in cycling, and it only gets worse with ‘cross. We can not only sit for hours discussing which treads we might run in next week’s local race, we can also sit for another two hours debating which direction we might run them.
I’m telling you. It gets out of control.
I digress. If, like me, you’ve given into both the iphone revolution and the dark side of Cycling Super Geeks, then you’re going to want to go over here asap to get a load of this sweet new app.
Here’s the blurb:
Designed by a cyclist, Bicycle Gear Calculator is a complete Gear Calculator for your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Evaluate current or potential Gearing Ratios, calculate Gain Ratios, Gear Inches, and Development. Use the Skid Patch Analyzer to visualize and minimize your fixed-gear’s tire wear. Explore equivalent gearing configurations that let you reuse parts you already have.
Don’t be shy. Go crazy – you know you want to.
If and when I decide to cross this line, I’ll let you know what I think.
Thanks to Austin Ramsland of Sweetpea Bicycles for the tipoff!
