Pinning the Number On

I raced my bike today and you know what happened?  I had a mechanical issue with my chain.  It got caught in the front derrailleur.  It took me a few minutes to get safely out of the peloton and un-jam it.

I time-trialed for the rest of the race and could not regain contact with the group.

That was frustrating.  Being taken out of the race by the bike is never fun, but it happens.

Does it matter?

No.  Not at all.

I’m not training for these races – I’m racing for training.  I’m pinning the number on every weekend just to get in the habit.  To get over the nerves.  To get past the novelty. To make the race day morning a ritual and an afterthought.

In the meantime, if I can have some fun, stay safe, and put up some results?  All the better.

Or if I have to TT off-the-back for 15 miles because of a mechanical?  Well, it’s still a good goddam workout, right?

Bike racing is hard and I’m inclined to get emotional.  But, when push comes to shove, it is what it is.  You get on the bike and everything can happen – and usually does.  You plan, predict, train, and try to control everything that you can control.

Then you show up and it all goes to hell in a heartbeat.

Sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches.

And keep pinning the number on – week after week.

  1. Sounds like my first BB last year. Hit the sunken grade during the “neutral rollout” and flatted my rear tire .2 miles into the race. TT’d for a lap and called it a day. :)

  4. And since you’re just training, you can leave the nice bike/wheels at home and trash on the B equipment instead!

  5. Not a bad idea since the A equipment is letting me down!
    Although it will probably be a long time until I race on (or even ride) the B equipment again… 9 pounds is a big f-ing difference! I don’t think I could even hold the peloton on Nonna the Tank.
