It's too bad that most group rides end in shelling all but the strongest riders. I think there would be more of a love of cycling if more rides from newbies were like the ride where you remembered why it is so awesome. I wonder how many newbs have given up cycling after their first group ride...

I thought it was for beer. "We ride for beer." I was sure of it. You mean... I've had it wrong all along? Shattered, Heidi. You've shattered me again.

I have been reading your blog for a while now and really enjoy it. As as older cyclist (55) I sure can relate to dying while trying to suck wheels. It is strange to ride all the time and see your fitness get worse, but that is aging. You're young, you will just have bad days but you can always get better, some of us just have to deal with getting dropped more and more! It's still fun, I am doing Ride the Rockies in Colorado in June with my 28 year old son and plan to be humiliated every day for a week! Getting over 12,000 ft. passes in going to make the west hills like a ride in the park. Keep filling us in on your journey.

excellent stuff- thanks for this. I do at times forget why I do this biking thing. I completed my 15th triathlon today and I did okay- a bit faster on the bike this year from when i did this same course a year ago, same in swimming and a bit slower in the running (i hate running) but i got a friend from work to do this race (her first) and she was almost DFL but not quite- strong, happy and frankly, getting more people into this is part of it too. best j
